The game was close to done, about 70-80% done, when the artist had to away for vacation for a few weeks. We wanted the game to be done before that, but couldn’t get it done in time. So right now the artist is in Egypt for a few weeks, so Small Soldiers will not be worked on in a while. In the meantime I’ve got a few other things I’ll be working on, and just for funzies, here’s a playable level you guys can try out, to get a better understanding of how the game will be:
Play me! Try the tutorial level!
(Ignore the title: Your music in action, this was the same link I sent to the music artist)
Been pretty busy these last few weeks working on my small soldiers game. Also got my hands on a starcraft 2 beta account few days ago.. And I don’t think I’ve slept since!
Anyway, on to the news!
If you’ve been to my site in the last few weeks, you may have noticed a ridiculous amount of massively-sized comments selling auto insurance (thank got they weren’t penis enlargement advertisements). Ive spent quite a while hunting down and destroying every last one of them! The comments are now completely spam free! Also installed something to auto block spam comments for now on, so it should be smooth sailing from here on out.
Been working hard on some things lately. In a few days I’ll toss up another preview of the small soldiers game, this time with two playable levels, yay! Also just for fun, I’ll throw up some older files of Raze back when I was developing it. (They’re pretty funny hehe).
Because of all the spam that has plagued this site lately, I’ve not really been able to read any of your comments. Taking a look now I see that there are a lot of questions, here’s the most frequent questions. (I’ll also be putting these up in the F.A.Q. Section.
Do you read the comments?
Of course I do! Every single one of em!
I’m interested in putting your game on my site, can I do this?
No problem, feel free to put any of my games on you websites without needing to ask! Of course, the downloads page isn’t finished, which I plan to get done soon. When it is, you’ll be able to put my games on your website with ease.
Hurry up and finish your new game! I’m bored!
I would love to be able to snap my fingers and pump out a game. But the truth is I work very very hard on my games to make sure they are very fun and of high quality. Raze actually took around 6 to 8 months to make with me and Addison (artist). The Small Soldiers game has been in development for about 3 months now, and is about 70% complete. If you’ve completely beaten Raze and want something new and fun to play, Newgrounds.com has tons of great games. As a matter of fact, just about every Flash game, ever, is on that website =)
It’s been a week, where’s your new post?
I’m a very busy (and forgetful) dude. I’ll try to make a new post at least once a week, but sometimes there may not be much to say yet, or I may have something really cool coming soon. So the posts may be late sometimes, and other times they may be early. It all depends on how much time I’ve got, and how much awesome stuff I’ve got to show/say.
When I try to play your game, it just loads the post page…
The games here launch in a popup window. Your browser may be completely blocking popups. I’ll be putting a link to each game on a popular website that is based on playing Flash games, so you will be able to play the game just fine without problems.
I have some great idea’s for Raze 2!
If you have new ideas that’s great! Just stick em in a comment. I love reading your suggestions for a second Raze, just remember that we won’t be working on Raze for a while, we’ll probably be making another one or two games first, so don’t hold your breath.
Why not make Raze 2 now? Why make other games first?
The main reason we’re making other games is so Raze 2 can be much better. Making other games in the meantime allows us to improve our art and programming skills. For example, in the Small Soldiers game, I created a rendering engine that allows me to have thousands of characters and effects on screen without any lag, not even the slightest bit. Now I’ll be able to use that technique for Raze 2 when the time comes. We were also thinking of making a small online game first, just to iron out all the bugs and problems that may arise, so when we do online with Raze 2, we’ll be able to make it a very nice and hassle-free experience. Plus, after working on Raze for 8 months, we need a break from it lol. If I see another Space soldier, Alien, Zombie, or Robot, I might go Crazy!
Also, the extra games we’re making allows us to create a bigger/better portfolio. So when it comes time to make Raze 2, we can show off our games to big game companies, and possibly get a shot working with a big company, making Raze on Xbox360, PS3, or as an official PC game. (This means you’ll get to play the game full screen, and we’ll get to put in tons of sexy things including online play for sure).
Raze should be on PS3/Xbox360/PC, that would be sweet!
I agree! (Read above answers)
Does Raze remind you of Halo?
Actually, when making Raze we wanted it to be as original as possible. We tried to accomplish this with the characters (Aliens, Zombies, Robots), and with the guns (Flame Shotgun, Ice Chaingun, etc). Although, yes we literally plucked Sgt. Johnson right out of Halo. Why? Because Sgt. Johnson is just plain awesome.
Why use the name Raze? What does it mean?
We wanted a good one word name that doesn’t really mean much on it’s own, but sounds really cool, similar to the game ‘Quake’. The word Raze actually means to destroy a building. Since our game is about the destruction of Earth, (and Raze sounds cool on it’s own), we went with it.
Your Small Soldiers game needs a new title? Why?
If you google search ‘Small Soldiers’, all you see is the popular Disney movie. We can’t compete with that, so we need a new name, this way if someone were to google our new name, they would be able to find it, since the ‘Small Soldiers’ movie is already way too popular, and you’d never be able to find our game if we used that name.
Here’s some names you can use for it ____, ____, ____
Great, thanks for your name suggestions! I’m definitely hanging on to them all and waiting for the perfect name to pop up. Keep em coming! Maybe soon I’ll make a post showing all the name suggestions to far, which ones we like the most, and you guys can comment and say which ones you like too =D
I know I know, it’s been a long while since my last post. Been really busy with my new game actually. Here’s a recent screenshot of it.
Also, here you can see a preview of the game! (Please give it a minute to load). It’s just the menu, but you can get an idea of what the game is like.
As the heading above suggests, we’re not actually going to be using the title “Small Soldiers”. A few names have been thrown around but we still can’t think of a name. So if you have any cool ideas for a name, please list em in a post and if we like your name idea, we’ll use it!
So me and the artist of Raze have decided to wait for the next version of Flash and then either create a second offline version of Raze, adding many new features and making sure there are no bug, or we may head straight into an online version, but most likely an offline one first, to make sure we iron everything out nicely and are able to make the gameplay both new, fun, and lagless before going for online. Because we’re waiting for the new, better Flash player, we may make a few small games first before starting work on the next Raze.
After a while of experimenting with some cool new concepts of the second Gravity game, I ran into some problems that are not easily fixed. Because of time constraints and other things keeping me busy, this is going to have to get pushed back a bit until I’ve got some good time to really dive in. Right now, my main focus is getting the “Small Soldiers” game done, and it sure is coming along nicely.
Not sure which weapon is the best, what does the most damage, or which gun is best for headshots?
Here’s a nice breakdown of all the weapons in Raze, and some other stats.
Recoil: Amount the gun moves around when firing. Higher recoil = less accurate
Range: 300 = pretty much unlimited range
Pierce: Goes right through enemies
| Weapon | Damage | Recoil | Range | Shots/Second | Clip/Max Ammo | Headshot | Special |
| Pistol | 12 | 7 | 300 | 6 | 8 / 128 | 1.5x | |
| A. Rifle | 8 | 10 | 300 | 15 | 30 / 240 | 1.2x | |
| Zapper | 8 | 5 | 23 | 30 | 400 / 400 | - – - | Pierce |
| Shotgun | 25 x 5 | 35 | 50 | 1.3 | 4 / 32 | - – - | 5 Bullets |
| Sniper | 55 | 3 | 300 | 2.3 | 5 / 20 | 2x | |
| Railgun | 80 | 4 | 250 | 1 | 3 / 12 | 1.3x | Pierce |
| Chaingun | 3 | 20 | 100 | 60 | 400 / 400 | 1.3x |
| Weapon | Dmg | Radius Dmg | Radius | Recoil | Range | Shots/Second | Clip/Max Ammo |
| Bio Uzi | 12.5 | 10 | 2.2 | 4 | 300 | 6 | 18 / 144 |
| Grenade L. | 80 | 40 | 3.5 | 4 | 300 | 3 | 10 / 140 |
| Rocket L. | 150 | 105 | 6 | 5 | 300 | 3 | 3 / 12 |
Normally, all players have 100 health. But there are some modifiers in play. In the campaign, Zombies and Robots will usually have around 400-500 health, but have lower AI’s (more on AI in a bit). In the human campaign level where you take control of a prototype Robot, you actually have 1,000 health.
Difficulty also modifies ally/enemy health. This is done to add an extra layer of challenge or easiness to the game, while also making it seem like the enemies may just be lesser or more heavily armored. Generally, the easiest difficulty will make enemies have only 50% health, normal will give them 100% health, and the hardest difficulty will give enemies 150% health. (Calculated after the zombie/robot health mods).
Like health, you can get 100 shield power. Although, when you take damage, your shields will only absorb 90% of the damage, while the other 10% will go to your health. So if you got hit with 50 damage, 45 will be taken away from your shields, and 5 from your health.
The enemies will behave differently based on their difficulty setting. Normally, easier AI will tend to camp (stay in one place and duck), especially with long ranged weapons. They will also often stop moving to aim and check their surroundings, while more difficult AI will always be on the move, and very rarely stop. Difficulty will also greatly affect the enemies accuracy. While harder AI will have better accuracy and tend to go for headshots more often (though not too often!), easier AI will have a hard time keeping their gun pointed at you. Also, harder enemies will tend to shoot their weapons as fast as they can, while easier guys will shoot their weapons more slowly, and take their time.
If there’s anything I left out, just stick it in a comment.
Hurrah!
Finally I got a new website, one that works and actually has some content in it! I’ll be trying to update this bad boy at least every Friday with updates on my games and such. I’ll also throw in some updates during the week if I’ve got some important, or just super cool stuff to show.
As for the site, all my games will be playable from here, you’ll be able to get some nifty tutorials on how to do some things I did in my games, as well as some other handy techniques. Also, you’ll be able to download my games (complete with icon and description) for your website or just to play offline.
Making of Raze
Pretty soon I’ll make a nice post showing the making of Raze. It’ll have some screenshots of what it used to look like, what it looks like on the inside, AND… some funny playable versions of my old beta/test versions of Raze.
There’s still a few changes I plan to make to the site, and some pages that need fixing, but for now–
Thanks for visiting!
Aside from That Gravity Effect 2, which I’m currently working on, there’s another new game on the way with a great artist that’s brand new to the whole Flash scene.
We don’t have a specific name for the game yet, so right now we’re just calling it “Small Soldiers”, since the game focuses around soldiers, which are uh.. small.
I’m not going to get too far into detail about the gameplay right now, I’ll save that for later, but for now, here’s a picture of the menu we whipped up one night.

It’s hard to tell from this image, but the flags (and everything on them) realistically wave in the wind! =D
So there’s a quick preview of the menu so far, with a big war raging in the background. I’ll drop some more info on this game as it develops!
So it’s be about 2 months since the “birth” of Raze, and it’s been doing pretty well (thanks to you guys!), but many of you have been asking for an online version. Well, nearly Everyone has been asking for it!
I’ve been talking it over with Addison (artist), and we got some pretty cool ideas for an online version. Some of the ideas which Bungie later revealed will be in Halo Reach. So… Did Bungie spy on our conversation, steal our ideas, and put them into their game within a few weeks? The obvious answer is, maybe.
Anyway, thanks to the nice folks at Newgrounds.com, some people have suggested a few ways I can get Raze online. Unfortunately I tested some of these ways, and it turns out Flash just doesn’t have the online capability that a fast paced game like Raze needs. However, a new version of the Flash player is out which is going to have better support and speed for online play.
So the options we were thinking about are:
We’re still not sure which route we’re going to take. But we’re going to make a smaller game in the meantime, just to get a break from the intense work that came with making Raze, and give us some time to think over those options.
Once again, thanks for playing Raze!
